Moderator: Mislav Žitko Jovica Lončar, Union organising: what is it good for? What happened to solidarity? Why is it not working? Why do we have so many isolated strikes? Do not rule out that if you want to react properly you need to prepare in advance. What does it mean to prepare in advance? It means that it is too late to start organising when the situation demands immediate solutions. Serious action can only be the consequence of a serious organising effort, and that takes time. Serious infrastructure has to exist so that organising, solidarity and successful action can take effect. The same applies for the organising of political parties: a political party that aims for any kind of substantial change needs to develop parallel institutions that can meet the basic needs (food, health, education, housing etc.) that have been commodified for the last 30 years. These institutions can be built only on the basis of a strong workers' movement and strong means to slowly and thoroughly build aforementioned capacities. I will try to stress some of necessary prerequisites for successful workers' action building on more or less known examples of solidarity building in Croatia. Jovica Lončar is a member of the Organisation for Workers' Initiative and Democratisation. Main interest: history of workers' struggles and organising. http://radnickistudiji.org/?p=207%2F
