Crossing Technique: How to Cross a Soccer Ball

Step 1) Push the ball a little ahead of you at an angle so you avoid the defender and give yourself enough space to cross the ball without the defender being able to block the cross.

Step 2) Look up so you can pick someone out with your cross.

Step 3) Plant your standing foot right next to the ball.

Step 4) Turn your hips at an angle to the ball.

Step 5) Wrap your foot around the ball to bend it with the inside area of your foot.

Step 6) Strike the ball with pace, although not necessarily like a shot, take just a little pace off the ball, but hit the ball with enough power so you whip the ball into the player you're picking out with the cross.

Step 7) Cross the ball from any part of the field in the attacking third, you don't have to get to the endline all the time to cross the ball.

Crossing in soccer is a lot like taking a free kick, you want enough power to make it on goal but enough touch and skill to bend the ball around the wall or to get over the wall. With crossing, you're trying to place the soccer ball on a platter for the player to score. So all they have to do is get a foot or head on the ball and re-direct the ball into the goal.

A lofted ball or chip has a time and a place, like if you're chipping the ball over the defense for a breakaway, but for most crosses it's much easier for the keeper to get to these balls and harder for a player to score if the ball is hit softly in the air. If the ball is whipped in at pace, all the player has to do is redirect the ball into the goal. All the forward has to do is get a touch on the ball to get it past the keeper.

The majority of the time, when crossing the ball, you'll use the upper area of the inside of your foot to hit a cross. This way you can wrap your foot around the ball and bend the ball into your intended target. If the ball is coming into the player rather than going away it's much easier for them to score - the ball is coming into their path rather than away.

But there are times when you'll want to cross the ball with the outside of your foot or even drive the ball in with your instep across the goal mouth. And it's always good to surprise the defense and the goalkeeper. Remember Maicon's goal, everyone thought the Brazilian defender was going to cross the ball, but when he saw the keeper cheating a lilttle bit out of the goal, anticipating the cross, Maicon bent the ball directly into the net with the outside of his foot.

What part of the foot you use when crossing the soccer ball depends upon what you're trying to do and where the defender is positioned and how much time you have. If you have to kick the ball across the goal line with your toe at the last minute to get the ball to a player than that's wide open then what's you do. Just do what works in that situation. But overall, you're want to wrap your foot around the ball with the inside area of your foot.

As a natural corollary of possessing sublime kicking abilities, it should come as no surprise to those who've been living under a rock the uninitiated that Pirlo is a also a very, VERY good set piece specialist. In that respect too, the Juventus midfielder is capable of imprinting onto the ball a whole spectrum of different trajectories. From the "classic" inswinger over the defensive wall, to the more tricky but equally effective shot around the wall... all the way to the legendary "maledetta" (aka "cursed" shot), a type also made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo denoting a kick that, if hit just right on the air valve, gives the ball a very unpredictable and last-second "dipping" nature.

Now Pirlo places his feet around 15 cm from the ball. As an avid freekick taker and practiser myself, this is abnormally small. For an ordinary strike, you should be looking at around 30 cm. Now I atone this distance down to the fact that Messi is extremely well-balanced, many people would struggle to execute the technique properly when placing their foot so close to the ball, so make sure you place it more around 25-30 cm away from the ball. His standing foot is also pointing towards where he aims the ball to end up. Of course, the ball curves around the wall with this style, but his foot is pointing towards where he aims for the ball to eventually end up.


Execution

Now this is where it gets interesting. Pirlo strikes the ball with this part of the foot. Believe it or not, this is nigh on identical to where Cristiano Ronaldo strikes the ball with his foot for his freekicks. Striking the ball this way, instead of using the toe area, gives the ball more power, and as we will talk about later.. Combine this with other factors and you get a deadly swerving, dipping shot.

But one of the most important factors is where he strikes the ball. This is where it differs to Cristiano Ronaldo's style of freekick. Its relatively commonly known that to swerve the ball, you strike the outer side of the ball to get it to curve to the side. Striking the ball any further out will lead to scuffed strikes, try to remember that the outer edge is too far, and if you struggle to connect properly with the ball, then strike closer to the centre.

Follow-through

But this single factor is the most important aspect of the lot! It took me a few hours of watching and re-watching videos to completely nail down his technique in my head, but this was what left me stumped. Until you look closer. In the past, Pirlo kept his follow-through extended like a normal shot. But what he has adapted this season is to strike the ball with no follow-through. I've tried to integrate this into my curling freekicks, but it is extremely difficult to do. So this is where you'll probably fall down.

The picture above (despite being extremely blurry due to when it is stopped), shows just how far Pirlo's follow-through goes. He swings his leg absolutely no further than the picture above. Why does he does this you ask? Well, this is what gets his power and dip on his freekicks. As you'll see from the video below, all of his strikes rise and then dip viciously, while always curling away from the keeper. For this reason, it makes it so hard to save for the keeper. So above anything else, shorten your follow-through! It'll take time to adjust, but once you get it right your freekicks will cause more trouble for keepers than ever.
